Success of Bhutan’s economy is directly related to success of small and medium business.
Bhutan’s Economy
Bhutan’s economy is largely based on agriculture, hydropower forestry and tourism. Industrial production is primarily of the cottage industry type. The retail industry is the second largest employer of the country and provides for a large segment of the population. Bhutan is famous for its traditional textiles such as shawls and scarves are woven in this country. Local paintings or the Thangka is local Bhutanese artwork and is considered sacred amongst the locals.
Top cities in Bhutan are Thimphu, Phuntsholing, Paro, Gelephu, Samdrup Jongkhar, Wangdue Phodrang, Punakha, Jakar, Nganglam and Samtse.
Bhutanese crafts include items like decorative vases, wall hangings, statues, bags as well as bamboo and paper products. These handicrafts represent the cultural heritage of the Bhutanese community. Handmade paper is prevalent among tourists and locals as Bhutan has a big forest reserve with around 75% of the country covered in forests. Paper is an essential export item, and it is sent to the US, Japan, China, etc. One of the things that are popular among tourists is wooden products. Dappa that is a wooden bowl is the most popular item carved out of wood.
India is Bhutan’s major trading partner. The two countries have a free trade relationship agreement. Most development projects, such as road construction, rely on Indian migrant labour. Model education, social, and environment programs are underway with support from multilateral development organisations.
Bhutan exports about 90% to India, which is the country’s source for 70% imports. Most of the consumer goods and essentials are imported and its major export goods are calcium carbides, cement, wood based products, minerals and horticulture products. Hydroelectric power is Bhutan’s largest export product. The kingdom also has a preferential trade agreement with Bangladesh.
Bhutan’s tourism industry is based on the principle of environmentally friendly, economical viability and sustainability. Mass tourism is prevented by the policy of ‘high value and low volume’. Tourists have to pay about 200 US dollars per day (including hotel, guide and driver), thereby keeping Bhutan an exclusive and expensive destination and ensuring the preservation of Bhutan’s culture and traditions.
